The summer school is located at the Department of Language & Culture in Aalborg University, Denmark. Some practical advice is given below, but you can find more information from VisitAalborg.

Getting to Aalborg

  • Air carriers that fly to Copenhagen and/or Aalborg include SAS, Finnair, Norwegian, CimberAir and Sun Air (Aalborg airport routes)
  • DSB Trains run direct from Copenhagen (and Kastrup airport) to Aalborg regularly every day (Danish journey planner)
  • Ferries to North Jutland include Color Line and Stena Line (it is about one hour by train from Frederikshavn or Hirtshals to Aalborg)
  • If you arrive at Aalborg Airport by air, then there is a cheap regular local Metro bus (line 2) from the airport to just outside the bus station which takes only 15 minutes. The bus stops in the centre of town and at convenient places near the major hotels. It also continues to the university campus. If you take this bus to the airport, then make sure you take the correct bus (2A or 2B). Not all of the line 2 buses end up at the airport.

Getting to the University

Once you are safely in Aalborg, then you need to get to the university.

By bus

From the centre of town, one can take the frequent metro bus 2 to the University. They all run along Kroghstraede 3, a short walk from our building. The buses start from Nytorv, the main square in town, and pass close to Prinsen Hotel and Park Hotel. They can be picked up on the main road near the railway/bus station just 200 metres from both of these hotels (make sure you are going in the right direction).

If you catch Metro bus 2, then ask the driver for the Kroghstraede stop just before the junction with Frederik Bajers Vej.

All the bus trips cost 16 kronor. But you can buy a 10 trip 2-zone clip card that gives you a cheaper fare for ten trips (including transfers). This should be bought in a kiosk (for example in the railway station) for 110 kronor. If you are going to make more than 6 trips, it is worth it. Just clip the card in the machine when you enter the bus.

The key identifying landmark when you exit the bus is a new two-storey building with a big black square cube attached to it (the centre of the building over the atrium has a distinctive roof like the wing of a plane). This is the Humanities building, in which all Centre activities take place.

The city bus company has online timetables (in Danish!):

  • Metro bus Line 2 - from Nytorv. Very frequent service during the day (roughly every 5 to 10 minutes).

There is a yellow city bus (12) that also passes near the Kroghstræde building, but not at the same stop as the red metro bus 2. It is not so frequent. This bus runs close to the Zleep Hotel.

Buses run in the evening as well.

By car

The main campus is relatively easy to find, but it is spread out. After following Niels Bohr Vej, turn onto Frederik Bajers Vej - the site is just off this major road. There is ample free parking right outside the building, marked on map 2.
