Professor Theo van Leeuwen is Director of the Language and Global Communication project at the Centre for Language and Communication at Cardiff University, Wales. 

Theo van Leeuwen Dip Film/TV (Amsterdam), MA PhD (Sydney) After working as a film and television producer in the Netherlands and Australia, he studied linguistics at Sydney University, and taught communication theory at Macquarie University and the London College of Printing. He has also taught courses at the Universities of Vancouver, Vienna, Madrid, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Auckland. 

His research interests include media discourse, critical discourse analysis, and multimodal communication. He is one of the founding editors of the new journal Visual Communication, published by Sage.

In this PhD seminar, we will -- depending on the participants' specific interests -- concentrate on various aspects of multimodal communication, including visual, spatial and aural as well as textual and verbal data. 

Possible topics include:

bulletmultimodality in mass/personal media discourse, eg. web pages
bulletdiscursive construction of visual space
bulletglobalisation and multimodal communication
bullettransnational corporations in the global language and communication landscape
bullettoys as communication
bulletchildren’s entertainment, eg. CD-Roms and computer games

The application deadline is 1st December 2002. Please send your details by email a short description (no more than one page) of your PhD project, specifying your particular interest in the seminar and why you would benefit from attending, to the Centre Secretary, Bente Vestergaard <bentev@hum.aau.dk>. Please mark your message clearly with the name of the PhD Seminar.

A fee will be charged for participation to cover administrative costs, tea/coffee and lunches during the seminar. The fee for all participants is 600 Danish kroner, payable on the first day of the seminar in cash (an official receipt will be given).
